Look for the model sticker on the control board inside the opener housing, not on the keypad itself. The keypad housing rarely carries the model number after a few Texas summers. The three-wire keypads use black, red, and white leads; the wireless units have a learn button on the receiver board. That matters when choosing between an OEM Mighty Mule keypad and a quality aftermarket equivalent. For the wired FM135/FM136 series, the OEM part is our default recommendation. The aftermarket copies have thinner membrane switches and fail inside two years in University Park’s heat. Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- The keypad lights up but will not trip the gate. Most often this is a failed relay inside the keypad or a broken solder joint on the control board input. The keypad thinks it sent the signal; the board never hears it.
- Intermittent operation: works in the morning, dead by afternoon. University Park heat expands the circuit board traces inside the keypad housing, and a hairline crack opens. It closes again at night, so the keypad seems fine until noon.
- The intercom rings the house but the call drops when anyone speaks. That is usually the intercom module’s amplifier stage failing, or a corroded connection inside the speaker unit where south-facing afternoon sun has baked the housing for a decade.
- A visitor calls from the gate and hears only static on their end. Condensation inside the intercom housing is the usual culprit, especially after a cold snap following a wet spell. The mic element oxidizes and sends noise instead of voice.
- The keypad works from the house side but not from the street side. That is a misaligned or failed battery in the wireless keypad receiver, or a corroded data wire where the conduit failed at the gate hinge. Wired Mighty Mule keypads run low-voltage signal over three conductors, and one broken strand is enough to drop the signal.

DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check: battery condition in wireless keypads, whether the wiring at the keypad housing looks chewed or corroded, and whether the board LED responds when you hold the learn button. That last test tells us whether the board input is alive. If the board LED responds but the gate does not move, the problem is likely the keypad. If the board never sees the signal, it is wiring or the board itself.
